Late Equalizer Steals Victory: Botafogo and Corinthians Draw in Tense Match
Rio de Janeiro – Botafogo and Corinthians battled to a one to one draw in a hard-fought match at the Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos, in a game that was matchday 17 of the Brazilian Serie A.
Botafogo controlled possession with 57%, creating eleven goal-scoring chances, three of which were on target. The first half was in favour of the home side, who took the lead in the 24th minute thanks to a goal by A. Cabral, assisted by Nathan Fernandes.
Corinthians, for their part, found it difficult to impose their game, but showed resilience. With 43% possession, they managed ten shots, four of them on target. The Paulista team’s persistence paid off in the 84th minute, when M. Depay equalised with a goal, after a pass from Joao Pedro.
The match was characterised by an intense and disputed game, reflected in the number of fouls committed by both teams (17 by Botafogo and 13 by Corinthians) and the yellow cards received. Referee Rodrigo Jose Pereira de Lima booked four Botafogo players and two from Corinthians.
