Dortmund Edges Past Sporting CP in Champions League Thriller
Borussia Dortmund secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Sporting CP at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK in Dortmund, in a UEFA Champions League 2024 knockout round playoff match. Despite enjoying slightly more possession (55% to 45%), the game was a tight affair with limited clear-cut chances. Dortmund registered 18 shots, 5 on target, while Sporting CP managed only 7, with just 1 on target.
The only goal of the game arrived in the 59th minute, courtesy of a goal from Sébastien Guirassy, which initially was a missed penalty. Guirassy also provided the assist. The German side had a goal disallowed for offside in the 74th minute and received one yellow card. Despite Dortmund’s territorial dominance, Sporting CP put up a strong defensive display, frustrating the home side for much of the game. The win gives Borussia Dortmund a slight advantage heading into the second leg.
