Benfica and Rio Ave Draw in Dramatic Finish in Lisbon
Lisbon, Portugal – In a match filled with emotions at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Benfica and Rio Ave drew in a Primeira Liga match on the first day of the season. Despite Benfica’s overwhelming ball possession (69%) and superior shots on goal, Rio Ave managed to resist and take home a valuable point.
The match was characterized by physical play, as evidenced by the four yellow cards shown throughout the match. VAR intervened in the 60th minute, disallowing a goal by Benfica’s A. Silva due to a previous foul. Benfica seemed to be in control of the match when G. Sudakov scored in the 86th minute, assisted by D. Lukebakio, however, Rio Ave’s Andre Luiz responded in stoppage time (90′) with a goal assisted by T. Nikitscher, leveling the score and sealing the final draw. Rio Ave made the most of its limited opportunities, while Benfica, despite creating numerous chances, failed to capitalize on its superiority on the scoreboard.
