Draw in Baku: Ukraine Drops Points Against Azerbaijan
Baku, September 9, 2025 – In a match held at the Tofiq Bəhramov adına Respublika stadionu in Baku, Azerbaijan and Ukraine drew in a game corresponding to the group stage of the European qualification for the World Cup. Greek referee Vassilis Fotias officiated the match.
Ukraine dominated possession with 74% and generated a greater number of chances, with 12 total shots, although only 3 of them were on target. G. Sudakov put the visitors ahead in the 51st minute, following an assist from O. Zubkov.
Azerbaijan, with 26% possession, remained solid in defense and took advantage of their opportunities. Despite generating only 4 shots, one of them, a penalty converted by E. Mahmudov in the 72nd minute, allowed them to equalize.
The match was tense, with a total of 5 yellow cards for Azerbaijan and 4 for Ukraine. Azerbaijan committed 9 fouls, while Ukraine committed 12. The match ended in a draw, leaving a bittersweet taste for both teams on their way to the World Cup. Ukraine had 8 corners and Azerbaijan had 1.
