Austria Edges Out Romania in High-Action Match in Vienna
Vienna – Austria defeated Romania with a score of 2 to 1 at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in a match corresponding to the group stage of the World Cup European Qualification. The match, refereed by Italian Maurizio Mariani, was marked by Austrian dominance in ball possession (62%) and greater offensive threat.
Austria opened the scoring in the 42nd minute thanks to a goal by M. Gregoritsch, assisted by M. Wober. M. Sabitzer extended the lead in the 60th minute with an assist from R. Schmid. However, Romania did not give up and relentlessly sought a goal, although with less shooting effectiveness. N. Stanciu received a yellow card for Romania in the 44th minute, and F. Grillitsch for Austria in the 90th minute. Drama struck in added time when a goal by M. Sabitzer was disallowed for offside after VAR review. Moments later, D. Alibec reduced the deficit for Romania in the 90th minute, assisted by A. Ratiu, although it was already too late to avoid defeat.
