Atlético Mineiro Edges Out Sao Paulo in a Turbulent Match
Belo Horizonte, Brazil – Atlético Mineiro secured a hard-fought victory over a depleted Sao Paulo side at the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto. The match, part of the second round of the 2025 Serie A, was characterized by Atlético’s dominance in possession (59%) and shots (22 to 6), although shot accuracy was relatively even (6 on target to 4).
Sao Paulo had an early goal disallowed for offside at the 17th minute. The first half saw yellow cards for Ferreira (Sao Paulo) and Lyanco (Atlético Mineiro) at the 34th and 37th minutes respectively. However, Luciano Zubeldia’s red card in the 45th minute shifted the momentum decisively.
Sao Paulo’s woes continued in the second half with Jonathan Calleri’s red card in the 84th minute, adding to their collection of yellow cards. Atlético Mineiro, despite not scoring, controlled the game, exploiting their numerical advantage. Lyanco’s late dismissal, resulting from a second yellow, did not significantly affect the outcome. Atlético Mineiro finished the game with one yellow card and no red cards, while Sao Paulo accumulated three yellows and two reds.
The match, officiated by Abel, Ramon Abatti, concluded with a deserved, albeit hard-fought, victory for Atlético Mineiro.
