Palmeiras Stuns Atlético-MG in Belo Horizonte with Convincing Victory
In a match held at the Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte, Palmeiras achieved a surprising victory over Atlético-MG in a game full of emotions and controversies. Despite playing a large part of the match with one man down after J. Piquerez’s sending-off just before halftime, the São Paulo team showed great defensive solidity and effectiveness in attack.
Palmeiras struck first with two early goals. J. Lopez opened the scoring in the 9th minute, followed by a goal from Allan in the 20th minute, both without apparent assists. Atlético-MG, dominant in ball possession with 65%, persistently sought to reduce the deficit, generating a total of 32 shots, 9 of which were on target. However, the Palmeiras defense remained firm.
The match heated up with several cards. Ruan Tressoldi of Atlético-MG received a yellow card in the 31st minute, while Raphael Veiga of Palmeiras was cautioned in the 34th minute. Piquerez’s dismissal just before the break made things even more complicated for Palmeiras.
In the second half, Atlético-MG continued to press, but failed to convert their opportunities. A goal by Rony was disallowed by VAR in the 75th minute due to a handball. Finally, Luighi of Palmeiras sealed the match in the 81st minute with a goal assisted by Jefte.
Atlético-MG dominated ball possession and generated a greater number of opportunities, with 32 shots and 10 corners, but the effectiveness and defensive solidity of Palmeiras were decisive for the final victory. Palmeiras, despite having only 35% possession and 11 shots, took all three points from Belo Horizonte.
