Cruzeiro Stuns Atlético-MG at Arena MRV with Resounding Victory
Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais – Cruzeiro pulled off a major upset by defeating Atlético-MG in their own stadium, Arena MRV, in a match filled with intensity and emotion. The encounter, valid for the Copa Do Brasil quarter-finals, ended with a victory for Cruzeiro who, although having less possession (40% against Atlético-MG’s 60%), proved to be more effective in front of goal.
The first half was marked by a contested midfield battle and several bookings. Kaio Jorge from Cruzeiro, and J. Alonso and Guilherme Arana from Atlético-MG received yellow cards before halftime. Just before the first time ended, Wanderson from Cruzeiro also got a yellow card.
In the second half, Cruzeiro came out with a more offensive attitude and quickly found their reward. Fabricio Bruno opened the scoring in the 50th minute, thanks to an assist from L. Romero. Shortly after, in the 64th minute, Kaio Jorge extended Cruzeiro’s lead, with an assist from Fabricio Bruno, confirming his great performance.
Despite the dominance in possession and the attempts by Atlético-MG, who totaled 12 shots (3 on target and 5 off target) against Cruzeiro’s 9 (4 on target and 5 off target), the home team failed to convert their chances. Cruzeiro, with 4 corners in their favor against Atlético-MG’s 3, knew how to better exploit their attacking plays. The match was very contested, with 20 fouls committed by Cruzeiro and 14 by Atlético-MG. William Furtado from Cruzeiro and Reinier from Atlético-MG also received yellow cards in the second half.
Referee Ramon Abatti Abel officiated the match, which was intense and full of tension, but ultimately crowned Cruzeiro as the deserved winner.
