Atlético de Madrid Dominates Villarreal at the Metropolitano
Madrid, September 13, 2025 – Atlético de Madrid defeated Villarreal with a score of 2 to 0 in a match held at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The Colchoneros dominated ball possession with 61% compared to Villarreal’s 39%, imposing their rhythm from the start.
The first goal came early, in the 9th minute, when P. Barrios, assisted by J. Alvarez, sent the ball into the back of the net. Atlético continued to press, but Villarreal struggled to keep them at bay, resulting in several yellow cards, including one for D. Parejo in the 24th minute. J. Alvarez of Atlético also received a caution in the 32nd minute.
The second half saw Atlético consolidate their lead in the 52nd minute with a goal from N. Gonzalez, assisted by M. Llorente. Villarreal tried to react, but Atlético’s defense stood firm. The match was characterized by a high number of fouls, 12 by Atlético and 15 by Villarreal, and several yellow cards shown by referee José Luis Munuera Montero, including cautions for R. Veiga, M. Ruggeri, S. Mourino, and A. Pedraza of Villarreal. Regarding shots, Atlético de Madrid registered 8 total shots, 3 on target and 3 off target, while Villarreal only had 7 total shots, 1 on target and 3 off target.
