Athletic Club defeated Villarreal 2-0 in a thrilling La Liga match at San Mamés Barria in Bilbao, Round 16 of the 2024 season. Despite having slightly less possession (42% vs 58%), Athletic Club proved more clinical in front of goal. Álex Paredes opened the scoring in the 15th minute, assisted by Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta. Villarreal had a goal disallowed for offside in the 21st minute. The second half saw increased tension, with yellow cards awarded to both sides (two for Athletic Club and one for Villarreal). Iñaki Williams sealed the victory in the 69th minute, assisted by Oihan Sancet. Despite Villarreal’s higher possession, Athletic Club’s superior shot accuracy (4 on target vs 1 for Villarreal) proved decisive.
