Athletic Club Dominates Qarabag at San Mamés
Bilbao, October 22, 2025 – Athletic Club powerfully defeated Qarabag at the San Mamés Stadium in a match corresponding to the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Despite Qarabag initially surprising with an early goal by Leandro Andrade in the 1st minute, the home team reacted forcefully.
Athletic, with 59% ball possession, dominated the game and created numerous scoring opportunities, converting three of them. Gorka Guruzeta emerged as a key figure by scoring two goals, one just before halftime and another near the end of the match, both thanks to assists from M. Jauregizar. Athletic’s other goal was scored by R. Navarro, assisted by A. Berenguer.
Qarabag, although trying to resist, was overcome by the Athletic’s physical and tactical superiority. Despite having 41% of the possession, their attacks were less incisive and only managed to trouble the rival’s goal on a few occasions. The match passed without warnings or expulsions for either team. Shots on goal marked a clear difference: 5 for Athletic and 4 for Qarabag, reflecting the home dominance.
