Athletic Club and Grêmio played a thrilling match at Estádio Joaquim Portugal in São João Del Rei, Minas Gerais, for the second round of the 2025 Copa Do Brasil. The game went to penalties after a dramatic draw at the end of regulation time.
Athletic Club took the lead in the 3rd minute with a goal from David Braga. Grêmio responded quickly, equalizing in the 11th minute with a goal from Braithwaite and retaking the lead in the 20th minute thanks to Joao Lucas. The expulsion of Luan Candido for a double yellow card in the 45th minute was a turning point. Athletic Club pulled one back before halftime with a goal from Diego Fumaca in the 48th minute.
The second half was equally intense, with Arezo scoring for Grêmio in the 89th minute. An own goal by Joao Lucas in the 90th minute left the score tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.
The penalty shootout was a rollercoaster, with both teams scoring and missing. Ultimately, Grêmio prevailed after a series of 17 penalties. Athletic Club dominated possession (68%) and had more shots (17 to Grêmio’s 12), but effectiveness and luck were on Grêmio’s side in a night full of emotions.
