Athletic Club vs Atlético Madrid: Correa late goal secures victory for visitors
Athletic Club and Atlético Madrid battled it out at San Mamés Barria in Bilbao on Saturday, with a late goal from Ángel Correa securing a 1-0 victory for the visitors.
The match started off with a flurry of yellow cards for Athletic Club. Nico Williams received the first in the 15th minute, followed by Yeray Alvarez in the 34th and Oihan Sancet in the 35th. Despite these early setbacks, Athletic Club had a better share of possession (53%) and attempted more shots (9 to 8) but managed only one shot on target compared to Atlético Madrid’s single shot on target.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.
Athletic Club thought they had taken the lead early in the second half when Nico Williams found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.
In the latter stages of the game, Atlético Madrid introduced Rodrigo Riquelme, Alexander Sørloth, and Rodrigo De Paul, and the changes paid off. Sørloth provided the assist for Correa who slotted the ball past the helpless Athletic Club goalkeeper in the 90th minute.
The win moves Atlético Madrid up the table, while Athletic Club will be disappointed to have lost at home after a decent performance.
