Iraq Edges Past Palestine in Thrilling World Cup Qualifier
Amman, Jordan – Iraq secured a 1-2 victory over Palestine in a dramatic Group 8, 3rd Round Asian World Cup Qualifying match held at the Amman International Stadium on March 25th, 2025. Despite having less possession (46%), Iraq proved more clinical in front of goal.
Alaa Hussein gave Iraq the lead in the 34th minute, assisted by Ihsan Bayesh. Palestine mounted a late comeback with goals from Waseem Abou Ali (88th minute) and Abdallah Mahajna (90th minute), but it was ultimately not enough to prevent the defeat. The match was a tense affair, with seven yellow cards shown to players from both sides. Palestine enjoyed more possession (54%) and attempted more shots (12 to Iraq’s 13), but Iraq was more accurate on target (3 to 5). The victory keeps Iraq’s qualification hopes alive.
