Lille and Borussia Dortmund played a thrilling match in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, held at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille on March 12th, 2025. The match, refereed by Sandro Schärer from Switzerland, was a back-and-forth affair that ended with a 2-3 victory for Borussia Dortmund.
Lille took the lead in the 5th minute with a goal from Jonathan David, assisted by Ismaily. However, Borussia Dortmund responded decisively. Emiliano Buendía scored a penalty in the 54th minute, and M. Beier sealed the comeback with a goal in the 65th minute, assisted by S. Guirassy. Despite yellow cards shown to players from both teams (two for Lille and three for Dortmund), Borussia Dortmund controlled the game, demonstrating greater attacking efficiency with 17 shots (8 on target) compared to Lille’s 11 (4 on target). Possession was evenly split, with Dortmund having 51% and Lille 49%.
Despite the loss, Lille showed great fighting spirit and made the game very difficult for the German team.
