Godoy Cruz Upsets Vélez Sarsfield at the Amalfitani
Godoy Cruz secured a 2-0 victory over Vélez Sarsfield in a match played at the Estadio José Amalfitani, corresponding to the sixth matchday of the first phase of the 2025 Argentine Professional League. Despite Vélez’s overwhelming possession (69%), Godoy Cruz proved more effective in front of goal.
The match started with a controversial play in the 4th minute, when a goal by Braian Romero for Vélez was disallowed for offside. However, Godoy Cruz took the lead in the 19th minute with an own goal by Pizzini. Altamira extended the lead in the 28th minute with a goal that sealed the 2-0 final score.
Vélez, with 16 shots (4 on target), tried unsuccessfully to overturn the result, while Godoy Cruz, with only 4 shots (1 on target), demonstrated remarkable efficiency. Yellow cards were shown to Jara and Altamira of Godoy Cruz. Vélez’s overwhelming possession did not translate into goals, and Godoy Cruz’s victory reflects great effectiveness and defensive solidity.
