FC Lugano pulled off an upset against Gent in a thrilling match at the Stockhorn Arena in Thun, Switzerland, during the fourth matchday of the 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League group stage. Despite having less possession (40% compared to Gent’s 60%), the Swiss team secured a 2-0 victory with a solid and efficient performance.
The match started with an early goal by H. Mahou in the 6th minute, assisted by S. Vladi, giving Lugano an early lead. Gent responded with more possession and attempts on goal, but Lugano’s defense held firm. Both teams displayed aggressive play, resulting in several yellow cards; four for each team. However, no player was sent off, allowing the game to flow to the final whistle. A second goal in the closing stages, scored by O. Doumbia in the 86th minute and assisted by U. Bislimi, sealed the victory for Lugano.
