Atlético Mineiro thrashed River Plate in a vibrant match
Belo Horizonte, Brazil – Atlético Mineiro convincingly beat River Plate in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores semi-finals, played at the Arena MRV. The Brazilians showed their superiority on the pitch and achieved a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Deyverson (two goals) and Paulinho.
The match started at a frantic pace, and in just the 22nd minute, Deyverson opened the scoring with a great goal after an assist from Hulk. River Plate tried to react, but they found a solid Atlético Mineiro who dominated possession.
In the second half, River Plate was forced to make several changes in search of a reaction, but Atlético Mineiro’s defense remained firm. In the 70th minute, Deyverson scored again to extend the home team’s lead. Finally, Paulinho sealed the result in the 74th minute, taking advantage of an assist from Deyverson.

They had 55% possession, made 11 shots (4 of them on goal) and 2 corners, while River Plate, with 45% possession, could only make 9 shots, only one of which was on target. Additionally, the Argentinians committed 25 fouls, receiving 5 yellow cards, while Atlético Mineiro remained disciplined with only 14 fouls and no yellow cards.
Atlético Mineiro’s victory leaves River Plate in a difficult position ahead of the second leg. The Argentine team will have to overturn an adverse result to be able to reach the CONMEBOL Libertadores final.
