Brazil defeats Ecuador in a low-scoring match
Curitiba, Brazil – Brazil defeated Ecuador 1-0 in a South American World Cup qualifying match, played on Saturday at the Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira. The only goal of the match was scored by Rodrygo in the 30th minute, assisted by Lucas Paquetá.
The first half was characterized by Brazilian possession (57%) and Ecuadorian pressure. The home side had more chances to score, but only managed to convert one. Ecuador responded with a more direct and aggressive game, which earned them 16 fouls in their favor.
In the second half, both teams made multiple changes to freshen up their squads. The pace of the game slowed down, but Brazil maintained control of the game and managed to defend the lead they had obtained in the first half.
Lucas Moura, who came on in the second half, was booked in the 78th minute.
Brazil sits atop the qualifying table, while Ecuador is in the middle of the pack.
