Universitario edges out Melgar in a tense clash
Universitario de Deportes secured a narrow victory over FBC Melgar in a thrilling match played at the Estadio de la Universidad Nacional San Agustín in Arequipa. The only goal of the match came in the 66th minute, courtesy of Luis Galeano, who found the back of the net after a clever assist.
The encounter was marked by the red card shown to Horacio Orzán in the 56th minute, leaving Melgar with a numerical disadvantage for most of the match. Universitario capitalized on the extra man and created several chances, but only managed to score once.
Despite the defeat, Melgar dominated possession with 49%, compared to Universitario’s 51%. The Arequipa-based team also had more shots on goal, with 18 attempts (6 on target), compared to the Cremas’ 10 (1 on target).
Yellow cards played a significant role in the game: Edwin Flores (Universitario) and Leonel González (Melgar) were cautioned in the 56th minute. Later, Aldo Corzo (Universitario) received a yellow card in the 70th minute, followed by Luis Galeano (Melgar) in the 87th minute. Finally, Walter Tandazo (Melgar) was booked in the 90th minute.
This victory gives Universitario three crucial points in their pursuit of the Peruvian Primera División title.
